CCCC Professional Arts and Crafts Sculpture Show: “Beyond the Obvious”

The Associates in Applied Science Degree in Professional Arts and Crafts: Sculpture (www.cccc.edu/Programs/Sculpture.html) is unique within the state of North Carolina. It is the only Associate’s degree in Sculpture offered through the North Carolina Community College System. The artwork of second year students pursuing this degree from Central Carolina Community College will be shown in this year’s annual exhibit entitled “Beyond the Obvious” at Crocker’s Mark Gallery in Raleigh, NC. Work will be presented in ceramics as well as welded and cast metal and recycled bicycle tires.

The students exhibiting in this year’s show are Camille Barden, Lisa Beavers, Travis Cohn, Ana Howard, Luke Jacks, Emily McFadyen, and Carlyne Thomas. The students are hosting a reception at the gallery with light refreshments and live music on Friday evening, April 28, 2006 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The public is invited to attend this free event. Crocker’s Mark Gallery is located at 613 West Morgan Street. A map and directions may be obtained by viewing the contact information on www.smcrocker.com or by calling 919-834-4961.The exhibit will be open from April 24 through April 29.

Part of what distinguishes this art degree from others in the state is its focus on developing the entrepreneurial skills of its recipients in addition to their artistic and technical abilities. Students take classes in marketing, business plan writing through the NC REAL program (www.ncreal.org), and classes considered to be more typical for artists, like 3-D Design, Metal Sculpting for Artists, and Ceramic Glaze Formulation. Because the Professional Arts and Crafts: Sculpture degree program affirms the viability of art as a career it attracts a wide-ranging student body. Current students include career change professionals, established artists and young adults engaged in their first college experience. Former Navy veteran and current ceramic tile artist Lisa Beavers says, “This program is allowing me to move in new directions during my mid-life years. I look forward to having these skills as I set up my studio at home and involve my children in my new career.”
